I'm the Director of Research at Sunbird AI in Uganda. Previously I was a Staff Research Software Engineer at Google Research, and tech lead for Africa projects at UN Global Pulse.
Some projects:
- Sunflower is a collection of LLMs that support 31 Ugandan languages, optimised for machine translation. At the time of writing, these models are the state of the art on translation accuracy for 24 of those languages.
[preprint, models, blog] - I started the Open Buildings project in Google Brain, using computer vision and satellite imagery to map nearly all the buildings in Africa, Latin America and South/Southeast Asia. We added around a billion buildings to Google Maps, and open-sourced a dataset widely used for census planning, disaster response, vaccination campaigns and other practical applications.
- At the UN I worked on language technology for early warning from community radio stations.
- I co-founded the AI lab at Makerere University and worked on various practical projects including malaria diagnosis and crop disease classification.
