Bio

I’ve worked in Uganda since 2007, first for Makerere University as faculty in the Department of Computer Science, then for United Nations Global Pulse as technical lead of Pulse Lab Kampala, and now as a director of Sunbird AI. From 2018 I joined Google Research in Ghana. I’ve also spent time working at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Google Switzerland, Medical Emergency Relief International, and the Neonatal Unit at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. I’m originally from Inverness in the North of Scotland.

Conference/seminar version

John Quinn is the Director of Research at Sunbird AI in Uganda. He was previously a Staff Research Software Engineer at Google Research, technical lead for Africa projects at United Nations Global Pulse, and Senior Lecturer in Computer Science/Honorary Associate Professor at Makerere University in Uganda. He has worked on a number of large scale AI projects across the African continent, in the fields of remote sensing, speech and language, agriculture and health. He holds a BA in computer science from the University of Cambridge (2000), and a PhD in machine learning from the University of Edinburgh (2007).
